Symposia Overview
Join us in Cape Town at the exquisite GSB conference centre at the Waterfront for three days (14, 15 and 16 November 2024) of allergy symposia. This bespoke offering will commence with an introductory session on the approach to a patient with possible allergy – a journey through the clinical history, examination and history-guided allergy testing.
Other symposia will include clinical immunology, atopic dermatitis, acute and chronic urticaria, asthma, food allergy and rhinitis. These important symposia have been specially curated to ensure that delegates feel empowered to assess and manage common allergic disorders at all levels of care. Information sharing will be delivered in practical classroom sessions allowing for delegate participation and hands-on relevant experience.
Provisional Programme
Basic immunology & Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEI): A step-by-step Clinical Immunology Workshop as we follow the journey of the T cell. T cell misbehaviour will be illustrated through case discussion & question time. The workshop is aimed at clinicians & scientists eager to connect the dots between patient, laboratory & treatment. Topics include:
- Meet the most intelligent cells in the human body: An introduction & overview of the role of lymphocytes in adaptive immunity.
- Lymphocyte subsets – understanding the lab results: What are they? How do we count them? What does the stuff about CD45 and CD3 and CD19 mean? How do we interpret them?
- Clinical cases: Meet 4 patients & receive copies of their lab results. They each suffer from a T-cell-associated disease. What went wrong? The penny will drop as we go along!
- The T-cell in the bone marrow: A biology lesson on the birth of T-cells & the time they spend in the bone marrow. Why do they leave home so early?
- The T-cell & the thymus: A biology lesson on the T-cell bootcamp. The thymus is not Las Vegas: what happens in the thymus does not stay in the thymus!
- Naïve T-cell panels: You ask the lab to measure T-cell development for you. We explain the ‘Greek’ of those αβ-γδ cells & the recent thymic emigrants.
- T-cell activation: On your marks ready, steady, go! A biology lesson on T-cell activation, differentiation, proliferation and clonal expansion.
- The lab can help with T-cell functions: How do we measure and interpret T-cell proliferation & memory. Are the T-cells working?
- T-cell homeostasis: A biology lesson on how T-cells manage to be both diverse & self-tolerant.
- Measuring T-cell regulation in the lab: It becomes messy when T-cell regulation fails. How can the lab help to understand failed tolerance and regulation?
- A lot of time for panel discussion & questions: Get the answer to the 4 cases. Did you figure them out? Our panellists will share wisdom & equip you to leave with the best T-cell memory that you ever had!
- PIDDSA business meeting: Join PIDDSA and stay!
